Japan bakery scores surprise hit with 'edible iPhone'

TOKYO — Fans of Apple's iPhone who just can't get enough of the popular gadget can now travel to Japan to gobble up a tasty cookie modeled on the popular smartphone.

A small countryside bakery in western Japan has enjoyed a surprise hit with its "iPhone cookie", a handmade chocolate biscuit decorated with colourful, edible application icons.

Green Gables in Tokushima prefecture pioneered the tasty treat in 2008 as a special birthday gift for a customer's husband, said Kumiko Kudo, the 44-year-old owner of the store.

But the biscuit gained nationwide fame after a photo of it made the rounds via microblogging site Twitter, thanks to a posting by two popular tweeters, economic writer Kazuyo Katsuma and pop singer Komi Hirose.

Since then Kudo has sold hundreds of the cookies.

"It is totally surprising to have such a big reaction," she said. "At first, the cookie was made just to meet a friend's request and I had no intention of receiving additional orders."

In March, she presented one of her biscuits to the president of Softbank, the iPhone and iPad's exclusive cellular carrier in Japan, Masayoshi Son, who was quoted as saying: "I'm so happy. I cannot possibly eat this!"

The hand-made iCookie doesn't come cheap at 2,730 yen (43 SGD), and is only available by order and inside Japan, where the waiting time to snap up one of the biscuits has been as long as two months.

Hiatus has been announced for Utada. In case you aren't aware of it yet, she has been appearing daily on the internet in the recent weeks.

In today's news report (quite some days ago), her song was adapted as the main theme song for the latest movie [Ashita no Joe]. In this movie, Yamapi is the lead. And the plot originated from a really old manga series about boxing. There also appears to be an anime version of the movie on youtube.

AOBA's 7th Anniversary BBQ Party!!!

コンビニ ２ Convenience Store part 2

スーパーでも同様ですが、「品切れ」で欲しい物がないということがシンガポールでは頻繁におこります。日本では、コンピューターでの在庫数の管理が徹底されているので、そんなことは滅多にありません。

先週、我が家の急病人のためにポカスエットを買いにコンビニに行ったのですが、やっぱり品切れ！　スーパーはすでに閉まっているし・・・。全然便利じゃない！（怒）。
それにとても高いです。シンガポールのコンビニにはがっかりしています。

でも、ここには日本にはない「超便利」があります。それはフードコートやホーカーズです。安くて、早くて、おいしい食べ物がたくさんあります。スーパーコンビニエント！
今日も美味しい物を探しにフードコートへ行ってきます！

Although it's similar between supermarkets in Japan and Singapore, I can't get the items I want due to them being [SOLD OUT]. And this happens rather frequently.
In Japan, there is always an automated system thoroughly checking the available stocks in the warehouse and this kind of situation rarely happens.

Last week, for the sake of a heavily ill person at home, I headed down to the convenience store to get a can of Pocari Sweat. And as I had thought, it was sold out! At that time, the supermarket was already closed.. It wasn't even in the least bit convenient! (Angry)
And it is really expensive to get stuff from the convenience store. I'm utterly disappointed with the convenience stores here.

But then again, there are also certain places that are super convenient which cannot be found in Japan. Of course, they are the food courts and hawker centres.
It is inexpensive, has a speedy service, and has a huge variety of yummy food. SUPER CONVENIENT!

Again, I'm heading to the food courts to look for more delicious food today!!

コンビニ Convenience store

シンガポールにもコンビニエンス ストアはありますが、日本のとはかなり違います。
品揃えのが豊富で見ているだけでも楽しい日本のコンビニは、実は外国からの観光客にも大人気です。おにぎり、デザート、メークアップ用品などなど、コンビニでしか買えないものもたくさん。

「コンビニに寄ってから帰ろう」と、日本人の心を掴んで離しません。

Although there are also convenience stores in Singapore, it's rather different from those in Japan. Complete with an enormous array of items, the convenience store in Japan is not only popular with locals but also tourists. Onigiri (Rice ball), desserts, make up items and etc. There are also many supplies that you are only able to get from a convenience store.

The one line that captures the heart of Japanese people-

Just a small little update on a post we never got to post in time. :)

Ｆ１ナイトレース、今年もやってきましたね。
私はあの音に耐えられないのでコースには行きませんが、きっとファンのみなさんはあの騒音に興奮するんでしょうね。ともかく、今日も中心地域ではどこからもエンジンの爆音が聞こえます。
歴史的なビルの前を最新のマシーンが走り抜ける。“絵的”にはかなりカッコイイです。

The F1 night race. And it's held every year.
I can't stand overly loud noises so I don't go to the stands but I'm pretty sure that the fans of F1 find the noise superbly exciting. Anyway, in the central and CBD areas today, thunderous roars from the speed monsters can be heard everywhere.
And the newest machines race through the front of the historical buildings. Rather cool for a pictographic view.

ＬＡＨの効能 LAH's Virtue

初めは『「ラー」ってちょっと変。なんて田舎っぽい音なんだろう』と思っていた私ですが、
シンガポールの人は戦略的に「ラー」を使っていると聞いて、その良さを見直しました。

シンガポール人は留学経験者が多いので、ＢＢＣニュースの様な完璧な英語が話せる人も大勢いるのですが、その人たちも地元の人と交渉をする場合は、わざと「ラー」を使うそうです。

フレンドリーな感じがするからとのことでした。

そういえば、私たち日本人も相手や場面によって、丁寧さを使い分けて尊敬や親しさを調整しながら話します。ちょっと似ていますね。

“[LAH} was kind of weird. What a countryside type of tone.”
That was what I thought in the first place, but my view changed for the better when I realized that it is also being used strategically by Singaporeans.

There are many Singaporeans who have the experience of studying abroad, and like the news reporters in the BBC news, I'm sure that many of them can use perfect English. But when those people speak to the people back at home, they seem to deliberately use ‘LAH’ in their sentences.

It was because it gave out a sense of friendliness.

Which reminds me, we Japanese will also adjust our politeness of speech, the level of respect, and tone to match many different situations with different people. It's kind of similar isn't it?

ＬＡＨの罪 LAH's Sin

ここの人は“オケラー”という言葉を一日に何回も使いますね。

初めてきいたときは「なんじゃそりゃ？たぶん中国語かな」と思いました。

それが“ＯＫ＋Ｌａｈ”だとわかるのには、長い長い時間が必要でした。

“ノーラー”、“ソーリーラー”・・・。しかも、ラーだけではなく、マーとかローとかバリエーションもあるそうですね。

いったい、この“Ｌａｈ”はどこから来たの？

The people here use this phrase "OKAY LAH" many times daily.

When I first heard of it, I was like "What's that? Maybe it's part of the Chinese language."

And then, to understand that it was simply an OK + Lah took me an awfully long time.

"NO LAH", "SOR RII LAH"... What's more is that it's not only just LAH, but varying ones like MAAs and LORs came popping out.

So where exactly did this "LAH" come from?

鯛焼き Taiyaki

Hi everyone,

Today's discussion is about Taiyaki (a cake that takes the shape of a Sea bream). The picture above is a little Taiyaki that once existed in Aoba. It went down someone's stomach though. :)

Well, let's shift the talk to the history of Taiyaki. According to Tsuchiya sensei, Tai (Japanese for sea bream fish) is often consumed during celebratory occasions during the olden days. The word おめでたい (omedetai)　means special, auspicious and happy moments in Japanese. And so, the たい (tai)　adapted from the end of the adjective is often implied in Taiyaki, representing an auspicious snack. It is usually filled with bean jam. Sweet and yummy!

And according to Matsuoka Megumi sensei, this had happened to her countless of times.

中国語 Chinese Language

私が東南アジアへ来て初めて覚えた中国語は「タパオ」です。
「持ち帰り」とか「包む」という意味ですが、
そして、次に覚えたのは「マイタン」。
この二つがわかれば、どうにか生きていける・・・・かな？？

The very first word I memorised when I came to South East Asia was [Ta Bao][打包].
It means [to bring home/takeaway] or [to wrap up].
And following, the next one I remembered was [Mai Tan][买单].
Well, if you know this 2 phrases, you can somehow survive here.... right?

オレンジ色のくし Orange Combs

これはよくシンガポールにいる日本人の間で話題になることです。

「どうしてシンガポールのおじ様はみんなくしをズボンのポケットにいれて、町の真ん中で突然使いだすのか？そして、ほぼ間違いなく色はオレンジ色。」
不思議です。

いつも身だしなみを気にしているといえなくもないけど、日本ではまずあり得ない光景。
なぜオレンジ色？黒や白のくしではだめなんでしょうか？


This is a topic often discussed by the Japanese living in Singapore.

[Why do the uncles and some others put combs into their trouser pockets, then whip it out in the middle of nowhere and start using it? And then, most of the time, the colour is a bright orange.]
It's a mystery.

Such an extent to which they are so concerned about their personal appearance, it would seem like a bemusing spectacle in Japan.

But why the colour orange? Does black or white not work?

A sad news of late.

Yes, we are all deeply grieved but nevertheless, we wish her the very best in her future careers and endeavors.

夕焼け Sunset

久しぶりに暇な日曜日、ふと窓をみると、ビルの後ろがサーモンピンクになっていました。（火事じゃないよ）
日没の時間です。
日本にいると、ゆっくり太陽が水平線の下に入って行くのがわかるんだけど、新嘉坡では、いつも気がつけば“夜”。
今まで、空の色が変わることに気がつかなかった。
結構、綺麗です。ね？

On a free Sunday which I haven't had in awhile, casually gazing out of the windows, a salmon pink hue came appeared from the back of the building. (It's not a fire though)
It was time for the sun to set.
If you're in Japan, it is common that the sun sets slowly into the horizon. But in Singapore, it turns dark in a blink of an eye. And before you know it, it's night time.
Up till now, I haven't been noticing the change in sky colors.
It's rather beautiful, isn't it?

英語が通じない！English communication breakdown! PLUS++ Interesting external site (Japanese blogger in Singapore)

最近、なぜか英語がわからないウエイトレスさんが多いです（怒）。
私がわかる中国語は　謝謝。再会。マイタン・・５つぐらい。
だから、レストランでは注文が通じなくて泣きたくなることもあります。
でも、そんなときはノートに漢字を書いてみます。これが結構通じるんですよ。
あ～漢字が書けて幸せ♡　漢字は素晴らしい♡
あれ？ちょっとまって。
英語は公用語でしょう？　なんで英語がわからない人が働いてるの？

Recently, for some reason there are many waitresses who simply do not understand English. (Angry)
And the amount of Chinese that I understand only adds up to about 5 words. xie xie, zai hui, mai tan (Cantonese)...
Hence, at times when I can't get to order what I want to order in a restaurant, I get so frustrated that I feel like crying.
But, when that happens, I just get my notebook out and try writing it in kanji. And this method does work pretty well.
Ahh~ being able to write kanji is such a bliss ♡ kanji is simply magnificent ♡

Hey wait--? Let's just pause for a bit.
I thought English is the official language? And why are those people who don't understand English working in the first place?

ビーチサンダル略して「ビーサン」。新嘉坡では一年中、大人気。私も愛用してますよ♡

日本ではビーサンは海外やプールだけで履くものでしたが、最近は街でもよく見ます。

でも日本でビーサンを履くのは夏だけです。９月から秋のファションを先取りするのが普通なので、ビーサン履いたら「変な人」！

「ビーサン」[biisan] is a shorter form for beach sandals. It is an item that has great popularity in Singapore all year round. Personally, I do favour it a lot too ♡.

In Japan, beach sandals were used to be worn only when going overseas or to the pool. But recently, I've seen people wearing them in the streets as well.

However, even when the people in Japan do put on beach sandals, it is only during the summer. From September, it is fairly common for autumn fashion to take the lead. As such, if a person is putting on beach sandals during that period, they are considered [weird]!

You'll be the center of attention if you do so. Be warned.

カニかま Crab sticks/ Imitation crab meat

カニかま・・・多分これを考えた人は日本人だと思うんだけど、シンガポールの人は日本人よりカニかまがすきですね。

初めて、カニかまが一本でぇーんとのった寿司をみたとき、超びっくりしました。
日本じゃ絶対あり得ない！！！

シンガポールにはいろいろ不思議な寿司があるけど、あれだけはまだ食べる気になれません。（カニかまを愛している人、ごめんなさい）
こんなふうに考えるのは日本人のおごりでしょうか・・・・？

Crab sticks... You would probably think that the person who came up with this was a Japanese, but it seems that Singaporeans like imitation crab meat more than the Japanese do.

For starters, I was really surprised when I saw that crab sticks are being used as an ingredient to place on top of sushi.
If it was in Japan, it would never ever be possible!!!

Although there are many different types of strange sushi in Singapore, that(crab sticks) alone is one that I am not able to bring myself to eat. (For those who really love crab sticks, I apologize.)
And to think of it in such a way is probably part of the conceitedness that Japanese people have......?

お土産（シンガポールから） Souvenirs (From Singapore)

私は一年に２．３回帰国します。その時、いつも私を悩ませるのはお土産！

ラッフルズのチョコや紅茶は結構日本ではウケがいいのですが、友達みんなに買っていくわけにはいきません。だって値段が・・。

何か手頃で日本人の気に入りそうな物があったら、ぜひ教えてください。


I return to Japan about 2 to 3 times a year. When that happens, the one thing that never ceases to cause me worry is the omiyage (souvenirs)!

Raffles' chocolate and black tea are rather popular with the Japanese but to get them for all my friends is nearly impossible. The price is a little...

「ボングウ」と「二重丸」 Bon Goût & Izakaya Nijuumaru Restaurant

ホームシックになったことがない私ですが、時々、日本の食べ物が恋しくなります。そんなときにいつも行くのが「ボングウ」です。私だけじゃなくて、多くの日本人の憩いの場所です。本や漫画がたくさんあって、自由に本を読むこともできます。

もうひとつは「二重丸」。カッページプラザにあります。日本料理がお腹いっぱい食べられます。おすすめは「いか焼き」です。

Although I never seem to get homesick, there are times when I yearn and crave for Japanese food. And when that happens, the place I'll go to is Bon Goût. It's not only to me, but for other Japanese here, it's also a place for relaxation and refreshment. There is a huge array of books and manga in the establishment and you may also read them as you please.


Another place would be Nijuumaru. It's in Cuppage Plaza. There, you can fill your stomach with delicious Japanese Izakaya food. One of my recommendations would be [Grilled squid] Ikayaki.

地図が塗り替わる Chizu ga nuri kawaru

新しい建物がたくさんできて、街の様子が大きく変わる時に｢地図が塗り替わる｣という表現を使います。まさに今のシンガポールですね。

When lots of new buildings arise and there are lots of changes to the way places and districts look, the phrase ｢地図が塗り替わる｣ is often used. Literally, 塗り means 'to coat/ lacquer'. 替わる in this phrase means 'to be replaced'. And as such, this phrase ｢地図が塗り替わる｣ means that are lots of changes in the appearance of a place. It very much describes Singapore currently.

It can also be used in situations like businesses and industries when they are experiencing changes very rapidly and frequently, etc. Example: 自動車業界の地図が塗り替わる。

誘致 Attractions

シンガポールの経済を語るときに、この言葉が一番大切ですね。
テーマパーク、カジノ、ユースオリンピック、国際会議等の多くの誘致に成功して、国が潤っていますね。

When it comes to the Singapore economy, this is the most important word of all.
Theme parks, casinos, the Youth Olympics, international conferences, etc have all been successfully established and held here. And of course, the benefits and profits received are not to be undermined.

Sushi Making Event!!!

Yet another successful food making event~!
We all love food don't we? :)

This time around, we have our attention centered around making sushi.With one of our class rooms and the pantry area, we created our masterpieces. The chef of the day was Matsuoka sensei. And she was accompanied by 10 enthusiastic students who were very interested in the sushi culture.

Everyone had the opportunity to roll a sushi. Some of them even brought their creations home.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we were not able to hold more than 1 session. But nevertheless, we had great fun learning.

Recently, there have been lots of road congestion near our school. And the reason for that is the NDP rehearsal. Is there anyone going to the national day parade this year? If anyone manages to capture any good pictures, please send them in to this blog. :)

シンガポールのおもしろい言葉 Interesting phrases found in Singapore

｢ヤヤ パパイヤ｣という言葉をきのう学生から教えてもらいました。
｢ケーポー｣とか、｢キアッシー｣とか、シンガポールの言葉ってかなりカワイイ響きです。
もっともっと知りたい♡

[YAYA PAPAYA]- (Referring to someone arrogant who likes to look down on other people), that was a certain phrase I learnt from my students.

And this is an illustration one of our students drew. Awesome isn't? Making an equation out of the phrase. Cool!

[KayPo]- (Referring to a busy body), [Kia Si]- (A coward). These are what I learnt from my students during class.
The pronunciations and sound effects of these words are very interesting & funny and I'm currently very interested in knowing more of them.

Anyone who has such words/phrases to share? Kindly tell me more about it! =D
