Souvenirs (From Singapore)

I return to Japan about 2 to 3 times a year. When that happens, the one thing that never ceases to cause me worry is the omiyage (souvenirs)!

Raffles' chocolate and black tea are rather popular with the Japanese but to get them for all my friends is nearly impossible. The price is a little...

If there is anything you think that is handy, cheap, and what the Japanese might like, by all means tell me.

  2. BAK KWA

Chinese New Year の時食べ物。

  11. Dear Sensei

I often think of getting gifts for my overseas friends so I shall share with you some of my ideas. You could get different kinds of gifts of different values for different friends depending on the relationship.

    1. Kaya is a kind of spread like jam. My Japanese friend like it very much. For kaya, I wouldn't recommend getting it in NTUC Supermarkets. That's a little too ordinary and has too much colourings etc. You could consider Kaya from Ya Kun Toast-they have nice packaging (favoured by Japanese), 1 big bottle or 2 small bottles in a box. It is about $5-10 dollars, a little heavy but can last.

2.Bak kwa could have restrictions in Japan, if not meat floss (chicken/pork..) in different flavours (spicy/original/seaweed etc) available in Bee Chiang HIANG -same place where they sell Bak Kwa

    3. Cheap souvenirs -keychains/pouches/singapore magnets/bookmarks etc from "3 for $10" shops in Chinatown for children or ordinary friends.

    4. For more premium items, some Singapore visitors/tourists gift shops (used to have one in clark quay area) where they sell nice real orchid petal necklace, bookmarks, jewellery, stationary, note pads, and merlion souvenirs, chocolates, local titbits etc (but some actually from Malaysia eg: banana chips).

5.or Singapore Heritage Centre - the 2-storey shophouse in Chinatown converted into a museum showcasing old days in Chinatown (worth a visit). There is a souvenir shop at level 1 selling woodcrafted bookmarks of buildings,($5-10) , samsui women-construction women with "red cloth hat" etc

    6. National Museums or philatelic (stamp) museum etc..selling cute souvenirs eg: "tu tu kueh"- round white snack in Singapore with coconut or peanut fillings- magnet/keychain/erasers $2 or so etc, Singa =Courtesy Lion t-shirts

    7. For housewives n mothers: pRIMA dELI/ aSIAN hOME gOURMET cooking mix - hainanese chicken rice / bak kut teh/ chilli crab/satay/laksa , easy to cook ! Singaporeans who study overseas always stock up such stuff! -Easily available in Supermarkets.. ($4-5) per pack?

8.Consider also bak kut teh mix pack- buy from famous stores eg: Song huat Bak kut teh -opposite Central NEL station.

9.whITE Coffee from Old town coffee if you like Ipoh, malaysia FAMOus white coffee. It comes in different flavours-hazelnut/original/
White coffeeis nice. Is there white coffee in Japan?

Ahhh.. so much for now..of course , food items from bengawan solo are always well packed and ideal for a gift but gets boring after a few times.
    10. For home or relatives, get the difficult biscuits available fresh in Sheng Siong Supermarket- pineapple biscuits, durian wafer wrap biscuits, love letters rolls -cost: $8-10 per kg. no nice wrapping but fresh from malaysia.

Apologies for writing in English instead of Japanese.
I will continue my Japanese studies till the time I can write all these easier in Japanese!
