Does everybody know what is a telegram or telegraph ?

A long time ago, urgent messages were sent by telegram. But now, because it has become possible to communicate easily with people around the world by e-mail and phone, telegram has fallen out of use in many countries.

However, in Japan telegram is still useful.

For wedding and funeral ceremonies etc, when there is a want to send messages publicly, telegrams are sent with high-class covers attached.

ホステル

訳あって、今年、我が人生で初めてホステルに泊まりました。

「知らない人と部屋をシェアするなんて！」と今まで想像もしなかったのですが、泊まってみて案外おもしろいと感じました。

そんなとき、ネットの記事で日本でもホステルが注目されていると読みました。おしゃれで、安くてその上いろいろな国の人と交流ができるホステル。まだ未経験の方。どうぞ一度お試しを。

For some reason, this year, I stayed at a hostel for the first time in my life.

Up till then, I never imagined sharing a room with people I don’t know but, after giving it a try I found it surprisingly interesting.

稲穂の季節

稲穂(いなほ)の季節(きせつ)になりました。

さて、「実(みの)るほど頭(こうべ)を垂(た)れる稲穂(いなほ)かな」ということばを聞(き)いたことがありますか。

辞書(じしょ)によると稲(いね)が実(み)を熟(こな)すほど穂(ほ)が垂(た)れ下(さ)がるように、人間(にんげん)も学問(がくもん)や徳(とく)が深(ふか)まるにつれ謙虚(けんきょ)になり、小人物(しょうじんぶつ)ほど尊大(そんだい)に振(ふ)る舞(ま)うものだといういみだそうです。

Rice season has come

Hello, have you heard of the saying 「実みのるほど頭こうべを垂たれる稲穂いなほかな」  ?

According to the dictionary, it means that like rice plants that droop lower as they are laden with fruit , human beings are more  humble and modest with the deepening of learning and virtue, while narrow-minded people behave arrogantly.

枝豆

                 

みなさんは｢枝豆｣という食べ物をしっていますか？

今では冷凍技術が進歩して一年中、そして世界中どこででもおいしい枝豆が食べられますが、

少し前までは、食べられるのは夏だけでした。

暑い夏の日、仕事を終えて帰宅するお父さんの苦労をねぎらうために、多くの家庭では

冷えたビールと枝豆を準備して帰りを待っていました。もちろん、私の父の好物でもあります。

Edamame

Does everybody know what food edamame is?

Now, refrigeration and freezing techniques have progressed such that delicious edamame can be eaten all year round, and around the world. Not long ago, edamame could be eaten only during summer.

During hot summer days, to reward the hard work of the father who finished work and returns home, cooled beer and edamame are prepared for his return in many households. Of course, my father is fond of edamame.

**** Kimono and yukata ****

着物(きもの)はもちろん日本(にほん)の民族衣装(みんぞくいしょう)ですが、その一(ひと)つに｢(「)浴衣(ゆかた)｣(」)というものがあります。

浴衣(ゆかた)は一般(いっぱん)に木綿製(もめんせい)で、とても涼(すず)しいので夏(なつ)に着(き)ます。また、字(じ)のとおり｢入浴後(にゅうよくご)にきる服(ふく)｣として、今(いま)も旅館(りょかん)などでよく見(み)かけますね。

夏(なつ)は、浴衣(ゆかた)を着(き)て花火大会(はなびたいかい)や夏祭(なつまつ)りにでかける若(わか)い人(ひと)が大勢(おおぜい)います。

                                    

The kimono is of course Japan’s traditional clothing. One of these is the yukata.

The yukata is generally made from cotton, so it is very cooling and thus worn during summer. Also, according to the kanji, as ‘clothes worn after taking a bath’, yukatas are even now a common sight at ryokans.

During summer, many young people wear yukatas to fireworks displays and summer festivals.

Hello Kitty Craze in Singapore

「ハローキティ」はサンリオが製作した猫のキャラクターの名前です。

１９７４年にデザイナーの清水侑子さんがはじめてデザインしました。

キティちゃんの本当の前は「キティ・ホワイト」です。

キティちゃんは二本の足で歩けます。でも、口がありません。

身長はりんご五こで体重はりんご三こです。

シンガポールのマクドナルドでは、今年６月にキティちゃんのぬいぐるみを売りました。とても人気がありました。

Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty is the name given to a group of characters created by Sanrio.

One of these popular characters is Kitty White, which was designed by Yuko Shimizu in 1974. Kitty White is an anthropomorphised white cat without a mouth and can walk on two legs. It is 5 apples tall and weighs 3 apples.

In Singapore this year from June, McDonalds sold Hello Kitty (the character was actually Kitty White) plush toys which were extremely popular.

山開き・海開き

シンガポールと違(ちが)って四季(しき)がある日本(にほん)では、季節(きせつ)によってできることと、できないことがあります。例(たと)えば富士登山(ふじとざん)ができるのは夏(なつ)だけと決(き)められています。一般(いっぱん)の人(ひと)が登山(とざん)や海水浴(かいすいよく)ができる最初(さいしょ)の日(ひ)は「山開(やまびら)き」、「海開(うみびら)き」と呼(よ)ばれ、皆(みんな)その日(ひ)をとても楽(たの)しみにしています。

                            

Yama-biraki and umi-biraki

In Japan, which has the four seasons (unlike Singapore), things that you can do and cannot do depending on the season exist. For example, climbing Mt. Fuji can only be done during summer. The first days when ordinary people can climb mountains, and swim in the seas are called yamabiraki and umibiraki respectively. Everybody really looks forward to these two days.
