３月３日は桃の節句

　日本語を教えるときに「もも」という言葉がとてもかわいいと学生がよく言います。音だけじゃなくて、花も実もすべて可愛らしいのが「桃」ですね。そして、桃の花が咲く季節には女の子の健やかな成長を祈る行事があります。

　「桃の節句」と呼ばれるこの行事は、「ひな人形」という人形を飾る習慣があることから、「ひな祭り」とも呼ばれています。ひな人形は、平安時代の貴族の豪華な衣装を着た人形です。この人形は女の子に降りかかろうとする災厄を、代わりに引き受けてくれると言われており、災厄除けの守り神のようなものでもあります。

　「ひな祭り」にはひな人形や桃の花を飾り、寿司や「ひなあられ」というお菓子を食べたりします。また、ひな祭りの童謡を歌ったりしながら、家族みんなで女の子が健康に育つようにお祈りします。

　Girl’s festival on the 3^rd of March

When the Japanese language is being taught, the word momo is often said by students to be very cute. Not only does the word sound cute, the peach’s flowers and fruits are all deemed to be cute. During the peach flower blooming season, there are schedules during which prayers for little girls’ health take place.

The Girl’s festival is also called hinamatsuri because of the custom of displaying dolls called hina dolls. Hina dolls are dolls dressed up with luxurious noble clothes of the Heian era. This doll is said to take on all the misfortunes that are about to befall little girls, and is a guardian against misfortunes.

During hinamatsuri, hina dolls and peach flowers etc. are displayed; sushi and hina-arare snacks etc. are eaten.  In addition, all the family members sing children’s songs of hinamatsuri and pray for the healthy raising of the little girl in the family.

建国記念日

　National Dayはシンガポールの独立記念日ですね。時々、「日本のナショナルデーはいつですか。」と聞かれます。日本には独立記念日はありませんが、２月11日が「建国記念日」という祝日です。

　では、誰が日本を作ったのでしょうか。神話によると、初代の天皇、神武天皇が日本を作りました。紀元前660年２月11日に日本を作ったそうです。

　中国から漢字を習うまで、日本には文字がありませんでした。ですから、この話も７世紀になってから残された記録です。神話がどれだけ正しいのか、今では調べることができませんね。

　皆さんは、天皇と聞くと、日本の帝国主義時代の悲しい歴史を思い浮かべるかもしれません。しかし、現代の天皇は平和のシンボルとされています。「戦争を繰り返さない」という全日本人の誓いを、世界中に伝えるメッセンジャーとなっています。

　Singapore's day of commemoration for independence is “National Day” isn't it?Sometimes, we hear people asking “When is Japan's National Day?”For Japan, commemoration for independence is not celebrated but “commemoration of the establishment of the country” is celebrated on every 11^th day of February.

　So who built Japan?Japanese mythology has it that Emperor Jimmu who is the first emperor built Japan on February 11^th, 660B.C.There were no characters in Japan, until they learnt Chinese characters (Kanji) from China. So this mythology was recorded from the 7^th century downward.  Now we can’t find how truth it is.Perhaps you hear about the emperor and might be reminded of the sad history of Japanese Invasion are.
  　However, the modern Emperor as a symbol of peace ambassador is conveying the message to the world that such warfare will not be repeated and all of us Japanese certainly concur.
